You ar...I've been going back and forth Jeremy. You are right though, the dowels are easier to make elbows with and if you use yellow glue the joints will never ever separate like with the plastic. In hindsight I should have primed the dowels first as if you use the Rustoleum Grey auto primer you can sand it between coats and fill any grain in to make it smooth like plastic. I can still prime, just some of the section it will be hard to sand. Also, be sure to find the older style poplar dowels. Many of the new ones I see, like in lowes or home depot are some sort of weird chinese wood that has a lot of open grain.
